Domaine des Billards Saint Amour 2017

Where is my Beaujolais? There is still a stigma among the masses regarding the wines of Beaujolais. The majority of shoppers still think of these wines as light, simple, fruity, and inexpensive. Most never consider purchasing them when at their favorite wine shop. When talking about Beaujolais it is not surprising to hear ‘I don’t like Beaujolais’ or ‘It’s not full-bodied enough’. WELL, I’m here to tell you, today’s Beaujolais is something else!

This past weekend I had a small gathering at my home to taste through 7 different Beaujolais:  2 Beaujolais-Villages and 4 Cru Beaujolais – the wines were amazing. Tasting side by side the differences between the Villages and each Cru were magnified and in no way were these light or simple. They were super aromatic, medium to full-bodied with loads of texture, complexity, and, dare I say, age-worthy.

While difficult to select one candidate, the Domaine des Billards Saint Amour 2017 at around $20 was a real eye-opener. Brilliant deep red in color with impressive aromas of raspberries and ripe cherry fruit that are quite inviting. Upon tasting, the wine is at first quite silky on the palate but things build quickly from there. The medium-bodied flavors really blossom on the palate with supple layers of ripe red fruits, a light citrus note (orange peel), and a hint of anise. The finish is lush and long. The wine drinks well now and will improve over the next couple of years.  Where is my Beaujolais? Right in front of me! Wines Under the Radar at its Beaujolais best!
