More recently I have been favoring wines of finesse rather than power. Don’t get me wrong, I still love rich, medium to full bodied red and white wines but I prefer them with some grace. In fact, sometimes a light bodied wine with lots of character beneath the surface can be more interesting than those that present the obvious. The Bisson Bianchetta Genovese ‘Ü Pastine’ 2017 is a case in point. The grape variety is grown almost exclusively in Liguria, along the northwest coastline of the Mediterranean, commonly known as the ‘Italian Riviera‘. The grape variety is rarely seen on the shores of the US but I was able to obtain a bottle on a recent visit to New York City. Lucky me! A Wine Under the Radar and then some.
Medium yellow in color this crystal clear wine shows clean, soft, and delicate floral notes of honeysuckle. There is a faint note of lemon zest and a definite mineral quality as well. Just very pretty. The wine is light on the palate with very nuanced flavors of pear skin, a light citrus tone, and silky minerality that are framed nicely on the medium finish. A lovely and poised Wines Under the Radar at between $20-$25.
