Bordeaux is one of the largest wine producing area in France. Based mostly on Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Merlot the red wines can include Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petite Verdot in the blend. The wines produced can range in quality from the terribly mundane to the most prestigious in the world. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to taste Château Milon ‘Cuvee Caprice’, Saint Èmilion 2017. Most wines in this price range $15-$20 are simply labeled ‘Bordeaux”. To find a high quality, beautifully crafted, Saint Èmilion in this price range is rare. Saint Èmilion is one of the principle areas of Bordeaux and, in general, uses mostly Merlot in the blend. This wine is 100% Merlot!!
The 2017 has a medium red cherry color and aromatics that reminded me of a bowl of fresh blueberries and raspberries combined. The flavors also showed this fruit component along with a touch of cassis. The wine was very well balanced and had light tannins in the finish. This 2017 is perfect to drink now and over the next several years. Enjoy it!
