I sometimes forget to practice what I preach. I get stuck in my ways of drinking predominately wines from France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Portugal. These are the wine regions I am most familiar with. A good friend recently reminded me of my goal: to objectively look for Wines Under the Radar throughout ALL regions of the globe. At the same time he reached out and grabbed a bottle of Agiorigitko from Greece. With my curiosity peaked, I headed home to try this wine. The next day I was on the phone with my friend thanking him for not only the recommendation but for reminding me to practice what I preach. I encourage you all to get outside your comfort zone as you will most definitely experience some truly interesting Wines Under the Radar!
Troupis Winery Agiorgitiko ‘Fteri’ 2016 – pronounced (Ah-yor-YEE-te-ko) from the Peloponnese region in an area known as Nemea in the southwest of Greece – think west of Athens in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula. The wine is dark cherry red with really nice aromatics of cranberry spice and herbs quite appealing. On the palate the wine is very smooth and medium to light bodied with bright fruit of cranberry and a caramel tone ( noted on label) that adds real interest. The finish of this beautifully balanced fresh red wine continues with cranberry, strawberry, spice, and yes, caramel. Definitely a Wines Under the Radar and at $18 a real eye opener.
